Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sullivan Funeral Home - Hanover on Jan. 4, 2026.
Harvey J. Smith of
Hanover, Massachusetts, went home to join his wife Patricia E. Smith on Thursday, January 1st, 2026. Born in
Quincy, Massachusetts, he was the beloved son of the late Hugh and Jennie Louise Smith, and the devoted brother of the late Hugh Smith and is survived by sister Beverly Donovan of Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
Dad was married to his wife who he cherished for 61 years, Patricia E. (McManus). They had three children. His son, James H. Smith, and his fiance, Lynne E. Young of Rockport; his daughters, Theresa M. Young, and her husband Michael J. Young of Hanover and Patricia A. Laroe and her husband Christopher Laroe of Hanover. Dad was also blessed with eight grandchildren. Erik J. Smith and his wife Samantha Smith of Rochester. Jamie L Lanoie and her husband Colin Lanoie from Sandwich. Jake R. Smith from Sandwich. Michael A. Young and his wife Valerie Young of Leominster. Benjamin J. Young of Hanover. Joseph C. Young of Hanover. Colben C. Laroe and his wife Valerie Laroe of Pembroke and Patrick G. Laroe of Hanover. Dad was also blessed with four great grandchildren Casey, Jax, Lyla and Charlotte. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who brought joy into his life over the years.
Dad loved and cared for us the best he could. He worked very hard and we always had a beautiful home to grow up in. He was always the one person that everyone went to for advice whether it be personal or financial. He helped us with our homework, came to our gymnastic meets, baseball, and basketball games. Through it all, when you look back, Dad's love and guidance molded us to deal with what was to come as we grew up. That guidance has helped us pass those beliefs down to our children that hard work and knowledge is what you need to accomplish the goals you have in life and we love him for that.
Once dad retired, he and my mom moved to Leisurewoods in
Rockland, MA. After living there a few years he became the President of the Home Owners Association. He also was elected Town Assessor in
Rockland, MA and performed those duties as well.
As we mourn Dad's passing, we take comfort in that he is not in the continuous pain anymore and that he was experiencing for years. Mom has taken him home with her and in God's loving care.
Family and Friends are invited to attend Dad's wake on Wednesday, January 7th, from 10:00 am – 11:00 am at Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St. Rte. 53,
Hanover, MA. A brief service and burial to follow immediately at the Hanover Center Cemetery.
