Francis Mccafferty Obituary

DR. FRANCIS L. "FRANK' McCAFFERTY, passed away on April 4, 2025, at the O'Neill Health Center in Bay Village, where he and his wife, Peggy (Major) McCafferty, both lived after they moved there from North Olmsted. He was 90 years old.
Frank and Peggy were married at St. Therese Church in Garfield Heights on February 4, 1961. They had seven children, one of whom, Brendan, died in his infancy. Frank is survived by six children: Mary Jude McCafferty (Ron Bloomfield), Francis L. McCafferty, Jr. (Kim), Brigid Lane (Dennis), Erin McCafferty (Roger Stevenson), Kerry McCafferty (Betsy), and Colin McCafferty (Janet). He is also survived by 19 grandchildren: Kevin Bloomfield, Connor Bloomfield, Cormac Bloomfield, Emily McCafferty, Frank McCafferty, Samantha McCafferty, Caitlan Lane (Matt Reinaker), Brianna Lane, Savannah Lane, Hailey Lane (Nathanael Beveridge), Brennan Lane, Regan Kirkpatrick (Chuck), Madelyn McNamara, Liam McCafferty, Molly McCafferty, Meghan McCafferty, Morgan McCafferty, Patrick McCafferty, and Shannon McCafferty. He has one great-grandchild: Gabriel Beveridge. He also has five step-grandchildren: Ryan Stevenson (Lauren), Ray Stevenson, Michele Pfaff, Stefan Pfaff, and Thomas Pfaff.
Frank had nine siblings, all of whom have passed away.
Frank and Peggy had many brothers, sisters, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. They were fixtures at many McCafferty and Major family reunions over the years. They also had many close friends.
Frank graduated from St. Ignatius High School, John Carroll University, and The St. Louis University School of Medicine (Class of 1959). He specialized in psychiatry but was board certified in several other areas as well. His private psychiatric practice was interrupted in 1967 when he was drafted by the United States Army. Based at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Major Francis L. McCafferty treated many soldiers who had recently returned from the Vietnam War. His wife and children lived at Fort Leavenworth with him for much of his two-year hitch. They all returned to Ohio in November of 1969.
Frank resumed his private practice and kept at it, full time, until August of 2022, when he - very reluctantly – finally retired. He had faithfully served patients for 63 years. He was quite fond of his patients, as they were of him.
FRIENDS MAY CALL IN THE McGORRAY-HANNA FUNERAL HOME OF WESTLAKE, 25620 CENTER RIDGE ROAD (just west of Columbia Road) ON FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 2025, FROM 3-7 P.M.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Holy Spirit Church, 410 Lear Road, Avon Lake, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in memory of Frank be made to the St. Ignatius High School Annual Fund at www.ignatius.edu/give or The Tunnels To Towers Foundation at www.dogood.t2t.org.
The family wishes to thank the staff at O'Neill Health Center and the caregivers from Amada Senior Care of Westlake. Those fine people always treated Frank with love and respect, which was greatly appreciated.

I will miss our conversations about both of my grandfather's service, and my uncles service to the country...... he kept me "hanging" in there when I was ready to throw in the towell....without him I would not be here today. He was stubborn...he was tough, and yet comforting, kind, and honorable. He made me better. I will never forget the countless appointments I shared with this hero. Thank you for caring & for helping me Dr. McCafferty. I miss you alot. i will move forward with the wisdom you have given me. Final Salute.......till I see you again. Mission Complete Sir McCafferty.

Dear Aunt Peggy and family

We wish you all condolences for your profound loss. Uncle Frank´s light shone brightly for our family during our Dad´s struggles. His support throughout the difficult times helped our family in immeasurable ways. His understated nature, kindness and caring for all is an example not easily followed. His quiet leadership skills represent the best of the McCafferty legacy. May God Bless you all and support you in this difficult time. I also can never personally thank him and all of you enough for supporting my education of the beauty and mystery of the natural world at an early age-teaching us taxidermy and the basics of nature along with many of our cousins have stayed with me my entire life. Our mother, Joan Petrello worked closely for Dr. McCafferty for over 40 years. Dr. McCafferty treated our mother like a member of their family. My mom and dad were very grateful for their friendship. The McCafferty family treated all of our family with the greatest respect and made feel that we were an extension of their family. We pray that the family will have comfort knowing what a wonderful man their father was and how much love was extended from our family.

Dr. Mccafferty was a friend to law enforcement. He was a pioneer in PTSD before anyone recognized the issues and concerns of police officers and their families. He is responsible for saving the lives of many officers. I thanked him then and I thank him again.
His family should be very proud of him.

Rest in Peace my friend

Dear Aunt Peggy Ann and cousins. Please accept our heartfelt sympathy. Uncle Frank was definitely one of the good guys. He was always such a good sport and I think we do have him on video singing "I´m a little teapot" at one of the reunions. So many fond memories of his gentleness and his fierce love of his family. Sending you all a hug and lots of love. Rosemary and Tony

I found Dr. McCafferty to be a very faith filled, kind, caring, and brilliant man. He was very knowledgeable and proud of his Irish heritage and history. He knew well how to be professional and personable at the same time.
Thank you Dr. McCafferty for the blessing you were in my life.
