Francis Xavier McNicholas

Francis Xavier McNicholas, age 96, of Sykesville, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 18, 2025. Born January 28, 1929, in Sparrows Point, he was the son of the late Thomas Patrick and Anne (Allen) McNicholas. He was the husband of 72 years to Virginia R. McNicholas.

He proudly served in the US Marines and then in the US Army, where he served with distinction in the Korean War. He was an Airborne Infantry Sergeant in 188th Airborne Regimental Combat Team. During four campaign battles, he participated in two combat parachute jumps and earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Airborne Parachutist Badge with two bronze stars and other medals. After four years of service, Sergeant First Class Francis McNicholas received an Honorable Discharge. In his civil career, he began as a draftsman and over the years ascended to holding management positions. He would lead military and energy divisions at multiple aerospace and defense companies, having been granted a range of national security clearances.

In retirement, he enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading, traveling and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. His gentle spirit and unwavering love and kindness touched the lives of all who knew him. Fran was a true gentle soul.

Surviving in addition to his wife are children, Michael McNicholas (Elizabeth), Nancy Fitzpatrick (Larry), Sandy McNicholas, PJ Mooney (Michael), and Amy Sears (Scott) grandchildren, Alex, Julian and Maria McNicholas, Gentry, James, Sean and Rob Fitzpatrick, Maddy and Drew Mooney, and Kayla and Nick Sears.

He was predeceased by daughter, Gina.

The family will receive friends on Friday, October 24th, 2025, from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. A Funeral Mass will be held on October 25, 2025, at 11 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 915 Liberty Road, Eldersburg.
