Francis Lavern Sloan, of Chesaning, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on February 29. 2024, at the age of 86. Francis was born on November 23, 1937, the son of Francis and Marjorie (Jones) Sloan, in Ottumwa, Iowa. Early on in his life, he worked alongside his father at their Septic Services business which was founded the year he was born. Francis started his own septic service business and purchased his first septic truck when he was only 14.
On July 17, 1965, he married his wife, Sandra Everett. Francis and Sandy have 5 children. Francis was very active in the Chesaning community; volunteering at Showboat, a member of the Knights of Columbus, member of the Brady Township Planning Commission which he helped form, he was also a member of the Chesaning Chamber of Commerce; where he received an award for volunteer of the Year in 2007, he was the President of the Saginaw County Fair for 9 years, along with many other aspects of making the Fair a success, he was a member of the Michigan Septic Tank Association Board, he played a significant part in starting 'Santa's Village' in Chesaning, and was an active part of building the first Habitat for Humanity home in Chesaning. When he wasn't volunteering in his community, you could oftentimes find Francis making a new friend, and spending time on his golf cart in Florida, which was one of his favorite places.
Francis is survived by his wife, Sandy Sloan; children, Mickie (Bruce) Ellison, Dean (Darlene) Sloan, Kathleen Kane, Patti Civille, Chris (Shawn) Sloan; 9 grandchildren, Zach, Justin, Jason, Alyssa, Jennah, Michael, Matthew, Tamisha, and Chad; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings, Marty (Robin) Sloan, Alice (Joe) Wilcox, and Fred Sloan. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ronnie and Charles, and close nephew, Danny Sloan.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 3, 2024, from 2:00 until 6:00 PM at McGeehan Funeral Home - Martin Chapel, Chesaning. Visitation will continue Monday, March 4 from 9:30 until 10:30 AM, and the funeral service will take place, at 10:30 AM at McGeehan Funeral Home - Martin Chapel. Memorial donations can be made to the Saginaw County Fair, in honor of Francis.
