Harwich Port - Francis (Bud) E Woelfel of Harwich Port passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 02, 2025.
Bud was born in Quincy, MA, and was the first person born in that hospital in 1935. He grew up in Braintree to a family of 6 children. He graduated in 1954 from Braintree High School and did a postgraduate year at Storm King in Cornwall, on the Hudson. His love was football, and he was a graduate of Springfield College where he was on the football, wrestling and track team. He received his Master's at Hofstra University and later enrolled in a doctoral program at Boston University. Bud moved to Long Island where he was a teacher and coached Football, wrestling and Track at Baldwin High School. After 3 years at Baldwin, he became the head coach of all 3 sports.
During the summer he worked with Farrer company, during which Mr. Farrer developed cancer and encouraged Bud to move to the Cape and help with his plumbing company. Bud became a teacher at Dennis Yarmouth where he was the football coach winning many Cape and Islands titles. Bud was not only the head football coach but also the head of Physical Education and Health. He completed 20 years of teaching while having a plumbing company and shifted his focus solely on Building, remodeling and mechanical, in Harwich Port where he had many years of success. He was known as a hardworking, driven man who emphasized doing things once, the right way.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Joan LeRoy Woelfel, his sons Scott Woelfel and his wife Andrea, and Derek Woelfel and his wife Sue Ellen; grandsons Ian, Devin, and Ryan; niece Judith Stobel and husband James; nephew John LeRoy, children Matthew and Amy; grand nieces, Dr. Taryn LeRoy and Dr. Erin Leroy; and, many more nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his sisters Mary Saltmarsh, Barbara, and Cecilia; Nephew Peter LeRoy, wife Linda.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025, from 4pm to 6pm, at Chapman Funerals & Cremations, Blute Chapel, 678 Main Street, Harwich Center. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025, at 11am, at Holy Trinity Church, 246 Main Street, West Harwich. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, 95 South Street, Harwich Port.
