Frank Mestas Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Romero Valley Funeral Home, Inc. - Alamosa on Jan. 22, 2026.
Frank Mestas (Kiko), beloved husband, father, brother, and community leader, passed away on January 20th, 2026 surrounded by his loved ones. Born on December 5, 1942, in Romeo, Colorado, Frank was the son of Frank A. and Cordilla Mestas. He is survived by his cherished wife, Patricia (Abeyta) Mestas; his daughter, Camille Mestas; his sons, Frank (Brenda, McKenzie, and Madison) Mestas and Jason (Paloma, Rohni, and Cruz) Mestas. He is also survived by his siblings Johnny (Vicki) Mestas, Judy (Denny) Mestas, and Arlene Mestas. Preceded in death by his sister, Esther (Vincent) Lopez.

Frank's life was defined by his devotion to his family, his community, and a deep love for the San Luis Valley. He was involved in many pursuits throughout the years, striving to further his education he first attended St. Ambrose Catholic College in Davenport, Iowa, then moved to St. Michael's Catholic College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and finally returned home to Adam's State College to earn his Bachelor of Arts. After completing his education, he worked as a smokejumper in California, taught math and industrial arts at the high school in Antonito, and finally continued his family's ranching legacy on the Rancho Rio Grande ranch in southern Alamosa County.

Throughout his life, Frank was also heavily involved in his community. Together with his wife, Patsy, he founded the Southern Peaks Trail Riders, where he enthusiastically shared his love of rodeo, horsemanship, and the responsibility and joy of caring for animals with the community. In 2003, he was elected as an Alamosa County Commissioner, a role in which he served for two terms. He also contributed his expertise as a member of the USNRCS board and was an Elks Club member. He was well known in the community for his generosity and willingness to help anyone.

To Frank, his family was everything; he spent his life devoted to caring for his wife, children, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Frank would often be heard talking about his family with a regard that only a few possess and a love that could never be defined. Bringing cheer to his children, from stories of his adventures, or a good joke to get them to laugh, Frank Mestas would do just about anything to see you smile. He was a steadfast pillar for his family, where everyone was always welcome. His 65 years of companionship and love for his wife, Patsy, are a testament to his life.

Frank Mestas will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community that surrounded him. His legacy of service, devotion to his family, love of the land, and deep wisdom will continue to be shared for many years to come.

Services will be held Monday January 26th, with a viewing at 12 PM followed by mass at 1 PM at our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Antonito, and a dinner reception at the parish hall (6633 Co Rd 13, Antonito, CO 81120).

In lieu of flowers we will be accepting donations for Frank's Granddaughter, Rohni's soccer camp. If you would like to support the family in this way donations can be sent to @RohniP on Venmo.

Frankie, cousin and childhood friend. Memories of you when you lived in Manassa:
*attending your junior prom in Antonito and my junior prom
in Manassa
* going rabbit hunting
* riding a raft on the pond in the land across from my house
*lending me your bicycle, so I could learn to ride
* saving me, my sisters and your sisters from burning down
the barn
*many more beautiful memories

REST IN PEACE
