Frank Nerney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McGuinness Funeral Homes - Sewell on Dec. 15, 2025.
Owen F. Nerney "Frank", of Turnersville, NJ passed away on December 11, 2025. He was 80 years old.

Born on June 28th, 1945, Frank was proudly raised in the Drexel Hill section of Upper Darby where he attended St. Charles Elementary and Monsignor Bonnor High School, learning & sharpening his trademark wit, which he could change for any occasion. Known casually to his friends as "Nern", he spent a lot of time on the basketball courts of the area honing his deadly jump shot. He also developed a love for listening to music, which led to giving recording a try with some friends as The Delphis, and his proudest song "A Hope, A Prayer and a Dream."

Frank enlisted in the Navy on January 27, 1966, which was a strange decision for him at the time considering he could not swim. He did feel he had one advantage over others at the time though because he could hold his breath, once passing a swimming test during training by sitting on the floor of the pool until someone came and got him.

Frank began his career at N.W. Ayer & Son, where he picked up his interest in stocks & bonds while on the train to work after seeing someone reading the Wall Street Journal. He went on to work at Marriott International, Inc., Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc., and finally retiring with United States Liability Insurance Group (USLI) as the travel coordinator.

Frank lived a life full of interests. He cherished learning and pursued knowledge in nearly every subject, finding joy in connecting with others through conversation. He loved to read and share his favorites with others. He loved photography, to the annoyance of some of his usual family subjects asked to hold their poses too long and to the joy and happiness of those that asked him to shoot their weddings. He loved food and wine, becoming a wine connoisseur and starting The South Jersey Food & Wine blog, listing his reviews of area restaurants for others to enjoy. Last, but not least, he loved sports. From the Philly big four, where losses could affect his mood more than he liked, all the way to the local little league, where losses could affect his mood more than he liked. He was a teacher, coach and referee to many, making sure any kid that played in front of him knew how to shoot a foul shot.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathy; his children, Frank and his wife Jennifer and Brian and his wife Jenny; his grandchildren, Samantha, Madeline, Drew, Leigh Ann and Brayden; siblings, Catherine Theresa Nerney, SSJ, Mary Ann Nerney, IHM, John J. Nerney and his wife Joanne and Thomas P. Nerney and his wife Christine. Frank is also survived by countless extended family, friends and his caregiver-turned dearest friend, Oke Chukwu.

Frank is predeceased by his parents, Owen F. and Catherine T. (O'Shaunnessy) Nerney.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Friday, December 19, 2025 from 10:00am until 11:45am at SS. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church, 362 Ganttown Rd., Sewell, NJ 08080. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00pm, followed by Interment at Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown.

In lieu of flowers, Frank's family kindly asks that donations can be made to a local organization for our Veterans or SS. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church.

Frank was a great guy always smiling and up for a good time. Some guys like my husband John Killer Kane thought Nern was the most intelligent guy from the old neighborhood of St. Charles Drexel Hill. RIP Frank.
