Fred Ulysses Hawkins was born on January 12, 1934 in Mashulaville, Mississippi, the son of the late Dazzle Hawkins and Mattie Harrington Hawkins. He was the second oldest of seven children. In 1940 the family relocated to Alliance, Ohio, where Fred was raised. Accepting Christ at an early age, Fred attended the Second Baptist Church of Alliance. He was educated in the Alliance public school system, later joining the United States Army. Upon discharge from the army he relocated to
Canton, Ohio where he was employed in the construction field. While residing in Canton he met and married the late Matilda Smith Hawkins and that union was blessed with two children, Frederick and Arlene.
In 1970, in pursuit of better job opportunities, Fred relocated to
Flint, Michigan where he obtained employment with Buick Motor Company, a division of General Motors Corporation (GM). Fred later married the Rev. Pauline Deborah Willis Hawkins, who preceded him in death. That union lasted 49 years and was blessed with two children, Sean and Aleesea. Fred ultimately retired from GM after 27 years.
Fred loved church and joined Ebenezer Ministries in Burton, MI, now Triumph Church - Ebenezer Campus, where he was a devoted member until his health failed. On his 60th birthday Fred was given a video camera which sparked his love for videography. Fred actually started and led the Video Ministry at Ebenezer Ministries for many years. He was affectionately known throughout Genesee County as "the Video Man". He trained and mentored many in the art of videography.
Also known for his poems and rhymes, Fred was a self-published author of poetry. He was a friendly, kindhearted man, who loved people.
