Fred Edward Smith, Jr., 78, of Independence, Missouri, passed away on January 27, 2026, surrounded by those who loved him most.
Fred was born on July 18, 1947, in Savannah, Georgia, to Fred Edward Smith, Sr. and Ann Louise Smith. He grew up with his siblings, Marie Green, Mary Ann Vinacco, and Lisa McLaughlin.
Fred will be deeply missed by his longtime partner and best friend, Carol Campbell, along with his children, Michelle Dixon, Natalie Pasquarette, Craig Smith, and Kevin Smith, extended family, and the many friends who shared stories, jokes, and good times with him over the years. Being a dad, and later a grandpa to many grandchildren, was one of his greatest sources of happiness.
Anyone who knew Fred knew his humor came standard. He had a gift for making people laugh, lightening heavy moments, and bringing fun wherever he went. He served two tours in Vietnam with courage and heart, and later dedicated thirty-one years to the Environmental Protection Agency, where he also stepped up as union president.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred Edward Smith Sr. and Ann Louise Smith; siblings, Marie Green and Mary Ann Vinacco.
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 3, 2026, from 5–7 p.m. at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, Missouri.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers and friends who offered support, kindness, and comfort during this time.
