Fred Douglas Thompson passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026, in
Manteca, California, at the age of 87. He was born on February 14, 1938, in
Longs, South Carolina, to his parents, Herbert and Mary Thompson.
Fred proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, dedicating 46 years of service before retiring. His military career was a source of great pride, reflecting his strong work ethic, discipline, and deep sense of duty. Even after retirement, Fred maintained close ties to military life, often making trips to Travis Air Force Base to shop at the PX.
Fred was married to the love of his life, Marianne Gouma Thompson, for over 50 years. Their marriage was built on devotion, loyalty, and companionship. Together they traveled extensively, enjoying many cruises and adventures, always side by side. Fred devoted his life wholeheartedly to Marianne and to their beloved dog, Fionna, whom he cherished deeply.
A man of strong faith, Fred and Marianne faithfully attended the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Modesto, California, every Sunday. They especially treasured attending the Midnight Easter Service, which held deep spiritual meaning for them.
Fred was known for being an honest man-sometimes brutally so-but always sincere. He was a true gentleman: strong, independent, and principled, with quiet integrity that guided every aspect of his life. Those who knew him respected his character, admired his strength, and valued his unwavering commitment to those he loved.
Fred will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing him.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 313 Tokay Ave.,
Modesto, CA 95350. A graveside service with full Military Honors will immediately follow at Lakewood Memorial Park, 900 Santa Fe Ave.,
Hughson, CA 95326.
