Fred J. Vey, Jr.
Age 73, of Marshall Twp., passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Born January 22, 1952, son of the late Fred J. and Grace R. Vey Sr. Beloved husband of the late JoAnne K. Vey,; loving friend and soulmate of Helen Schwerin; father of Erin (Daniel – his favorite SIL) Turo, and Eric Vey; grandpa of Ethan, Sammy, Joanna, Silas, and Gwen; brother of Debbie (Bill) Penn, proud uncle to many nieces and nephews including Jared and Josh Penn.
Fred married his high school sweetheart Joanne and they built a beautiful life together. From their early days working at West View Park to their adventures in raising children, their marriage was full of love and laughter. A devoted father, Fred was always there for his kids. He spent many years coaching youth soccer, listening to guitar solos, reading books before bed, and building forts and things for outside adventures. Some of their favorite times together were spent on trips to Lake Arthur at Moraine and to amusement parks in the summer. After Joanne's passing, Fred became the anchor point for his kids and remained so for the rest of his life.
Fred was blessed with a second love of his life. Helen brought a new spark of joy and their years together were full of love and life. They were strong together in difficult times and peaceful together in the quiet. And while they almost always had a furry friend in their home, their dog Lily stole Fred's heart – so much so that he made her meatballs every day. Helen brought a love of travel to Fred and the two had amazing adventures together: from their first trip to Vegas to celebrate Fred's birthday, to a dude ranch in South Dakota, a cruise down the Rhine in Germany to a ride through the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. Near and far, they squeezed all they could into the wonderful but short 18 years they had together. With Helen's encouragement, Fred rode horses, drove segways and even flew in a helicopter – they lived life to the fullest!
Fred was a sucker for his grandchildren. He created memories with all of them – whether he was cheering them on at sporting events, building things with them in his workshop, sharing "PapPap" jokes (like Dad jokes, but older) with them, or just listening to them play. He showered them with so much love and never missed a chance for a hug. If he was meant to be anything in this life, his true calling was being a PapPap.
Fred was an accountant by trade and worked with a number of organizations including CCAC, LaRoche College, YMCA and Habitat for Humanity. He also ran a successful tax business (Vey & Co) and took care of taxes for families and businesses for over 35 years. When he wasn't working with numbers, he was working with his hands. Fred loved to stay busy with building and repair projects, riding his tractor, and planting in his garden. He had a love and talent for cooking and you could often find him hosting meals or bringing something tasty to the party. When he found time to rest, This Old House or a soccer game on TV would help him fall asleep in his chair. Rest well earned.
Family and friends are welcome on Monday from 3-7 pm at Devlin Funeral Home of Cranberry Township, 2678 Rochester Road, Cranberry Township. Funeral Services will be held at the funeral home at 10:30 am on Tuesday. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Fred's name to The Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh.
