Ferninand "Fred" Weigel, Jr., 94, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2024 at the Russell Regional Hospital with his family by his side.
Fred was born February 11, 1930 in Emmeram, Kansas. He was one of four children born to Ferninand, Sr. and Lidwina (Sander) Weigel. He grew up in Emmeram and graduated from Victoria High School. He then attended Ft. Hays State University. He taught in a country school for a few years.
Fred served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was stationed overseas in Japan. He returned to Kansas after his tour of duty.
Fred was united in marriage to Imelda Leiker on June 19, 1951. This union was blessed with a son, Leon.
They moved to Russell in 1954. They later divorced in 1969. Later he was united in marriage to Joan L. (Kaufman) Garrett on August 12, 1999. They made their home in Russell.
Fred was a Banker most all of his life. He worked for Home State Bank, First National Bank and later known as Sunflower Bank for over 40 years. In `1972, Fred started oil investing with Jim Schoenberger. He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree and K of C financial secretary for over 20 years. He was Past Commander and Life Member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240, as well as District and State of Kansas Past Commander. He enjoyed watching sports, especially local teams and the University of Kansas. Fred had a smile that would light up a room that was only matched by the kindness in his heart.
Fred's surviving family include his wife of 24 years, Joan of the home; son, Leon "Lee" Weigel of Russell, Kansas; stepson Blaine Garret (Janet) of Castle Rock, Colorado; sister Vera Degenhardt (James A.) of Kirksville, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Renee, Jeanie, Erica, Phillip, Melissa, Angela, Kristin, Justin and Jordan; 20 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Thelma Dreiling and Hubertine Herbel; stepdaughter Diane Goodyear (Ken) and stepson Gordon Garrett.
A Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday, April 1, 2024 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. Vigil will be held at 7:00 PM, Monday at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Graveside Services will be held at 1:30 PM, Tuesday at St. Fidelis Catholic Cemetery in Victoria, Kansas. A Memorial has been established with the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
