Freda J. Stiles

GOUVERNEUR- Freda J. Stiles, age 79, of Gouverneur, NY passed away on September 4, 2025 at home under the care of her loving family and hospice.

There will a Celebration of Life for Freda on Sunday, September 14th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Gouverneur VFW. There will be no funeral service. Condolences may be shared online at www.frenchfunerahomes.com.

Freda was born on March 28, 1946 in Gouverneur, NY to the late George and Bertha (Shatraw) Weir. She graduated from Gouverneur Central School in 1964. On December 24, 1965, she married Leon A. Stiles, Sr. at the Gouverneur Methodist Church with Rev. Stanley Brown officiating. Leon passed away on January 16, 1997.

Freda worked for P&C Foods for 24 years as the deli clerk. She was well known for giving the kids that came into the store a sample of cheese and quickly became known to many as the "Cheese Lady". In her spare time, Freda would crochet, but most of her time was spent raising children, often not just her own but their friends and neighborhood kids as well.

Surviving are two daughters, Tina M. Stiles and Tracey L. and Alan Balster; a brother, Gerald Weir; a sister, Stephanie Besaw; five grandchildren, Jessica Stiles, Brian Blair, Jennifer Stiles, Kristi Blair and Noel Balster and eight great grandchildren, Cole, Urijah, Hunter, Kolbe, Treyton, Dylan, Gavin and Kyle.

Freda is predeceased by her husband, Leon Sr.; a son, Leon A Stiles Jr.; two brothers, Barry Weir and Grant Weir and two sisters, Bonnie Brownell and Laura Weir.
