Bergman, Frederick A.
ALTAMONT - Frederick A. Bergman, born August 3, 1935, loving husband and father, whose quiet faith and remarkable curiosity shaped a life rich in family, service, and creativity, passed away peacefully at Baptist Health Nursing & Rehab Center, on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. A faithful and reverent Roman Catholic in the most unassuming way, Frederick lived his beliefs through humility, kindness, and a deep sense of duty to those around him.
The son of German and Irish immigrants, he was born to the late Adolf Bergmann and Mary (Highland). In a small but fitting reflection of his individuality, the extra "n" in the family name Bergmann was left off his own surname, and he would carry the name Bergman throughout his life.
Frederick proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a radioman. He remained fond of sharing stories from those years, particularly the pranks and good-natured mischief that became part of Navy life and lasting memories.
A lifelong enthusiast of radio and electronics, Frederick held an Amateur Extra Class amateur radio license, and spent countless hours pursuing his passion. To the occasional chagrin of neighbors, a towering 100-foot amateur radio antenna once stood in his backyard, an unmistakable sign of the hobby he loved so dearly.
Determined and hardworking, Frederick worked his way through Fairleigh Dickinson University by attending classes at night while working days at Friendly's and driving his MG in sports car rallies on weekends. He would go on to build a successful career as an electrical engineer with Hewlett-Packard, where his technical skill and inventive mind were well suited.
Frederick possessed a remarkable ability to fix almost anything, often in his own unique and creative way. A skilled carpenter and woodworker, he built an addition to the family home himself, completing all the wiring, and crafted numerous pieces of furniture that remain treasured by family and friends. He was also a talented computer programmer, and an avid reader, who never lost his appetite for learning.
Music was another of Frederick's great joys. He built an organ for his home by hand, and enjoyed playing it often, and he was also a proficient accordion player.
He loved time on the water, and especially enjoyed sailing on Lake Whitingham in Vermont, and along Cape Cod. Summers spent in Cape Cod with extended family were among the moments he cherished most.
Frederick is survived by his son, Rev. Russell Bergman; daughter-in-law, Amy Bergman; his step-granddaughter, Dora Clifford; his sister-in-law, Ruth Rendle; his brother-in-law, Ralph Belmont; and many loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to his late parents, Frederick was predeceased by his wife, Lois; his partner, Judith Freeman; and his son, Christopher; as well as his brother, William Bergmann; and sister, Margaret Belmont.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Saturday, March 7, 2026 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Saratoga Rd., Glenville, N.Y. Mass of Christian burial will take place immediately following the visitation, and begin at 11 a.m., with Frederick's son, Rev. Russell Bergman as celebrant.
