Frederick Albert “Fritz” Briggs died peacefully in his sleep on January 27, 2026, at the age of 93 in Clemson, South Carolina. Fritz was born in Huntington, Indiana, on June 21, 1932, to Dorothy and Joseph Briggs.

Fritz attended Handley High School in Winchester, Virginia and graduated with honors. He went on to earn two degrees at Syracuse University. The first in Chemical Engineering, followed by a Masters in Chemistry. He was President of the Inter-Fraternity Counsel, and was a brother at Alpha Chi Rho. Between earning his degrees, Fritz fulfilled this obligation to the Air Force, enjoying the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron (currently better known as the Hurricane Hunters), serving in England, just outside Liverpool. He patrolled from Libya all the way to the Arctic Circle.

Fritz married his high school sweetheart, Julia, Dotson, and they had five sons together. After Julia died, Fritz remarried to Ruth Hannegan, and he survived her as well.

Fritz was known for his intellect and willingness to help others. He had a 30+ year career with Dupont company, doing research and development in textile fibers. He helped pave the way for Lycra to become woven, which led to the fabric Spandex. Additionally, he created the first permanent coloring system for fibers so that you didn't have to find the same batch number when shopping for yarn.

He is survived by two Sons and extended family.

He will be missed.
