Frederick Donahue Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John F. Tierney Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 11, 2026.
Frederick J. Donahue, Jr., 81, of Manchester, beloved husband of Elaine (Aiello) Donahue, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, February 9, 2026. Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Frederick Sr. and Ivy (Butler) Donahue.

Fred proudly served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1969. After his service, with an associate degree from Hartford State Tech he built a 41-year career with Northeast Utilities, retiring as a Distribution Operations Specialist-a job he took pride in and dedicated himself to with endless passion.

To those who loved him, he was known by many names-Fred, Freddie, Dad, Daddy, Bampa, and Grandpa-but no matter the name, he was always the same steady, loving presence. His greatest happiness was being with his children and granddaughters. He never missed a game, performance, or Scout meeting, devoting his life to showing up for those he loved most.

More recently, many knew him as "the bread guy," as Fred spent countless hours volunteering and helping others at MACC Charities, always ready to lend a hand and share a smile.

Along with his beloved wife Elaine, he leaves behind his children: Shawn Donahue of West Hartford, Jessica DiBattista and her husband Gary of Enfield, and Meagan Lapinski and her husband Paul of Coventry; his cherished grandchildren, Mia Persons and her husband Brandon, Morgan DiBattista, Maisy Lapinski, and Myla Lapinski; his brother Robert Donahue and his wife Arlene of New Britain; his goddaughter Karen Rossignol and her husband Richie; and several great-nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was predeceased by his brother Kenneth Donahue and nephew Brian Donahue.

We are deeply grateful to the Hartford Hospital Cardiac Step-Down Unit and Palliative Care Department for their compassion, support, and exceptional care during this time.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, from 1:00–4:00 p.m. at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 W. Center Street, Manchester, with a funeral home service immediately following.

Casual attire is encouraged in honor of Fred's love for the Boston Red Sox, the UConn Huskies, and his service to the U.S. Navy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MACC Charities.
