Frederick "Fred" Darnell Helm, Sr., 54, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2023 at his home.
Fred was born in East St. Louis, Illinois on December 3, 1968 to Fred Lee and Donna (Helm) Williams. He worked at D-Patrick Ford for 27 years. Fred was the most caring and loving husband to his wife of 29 years, Monica. He was also the greatest father his children could have asked for. Fred made sure to never miss one of his kids' sporting events. Not only did he love his children, but he absolutely loved spending time with his grandchildren. No matter how busy he was, Fred was always there for his family. Aside from his own children, Fred was an inspirational, father figure to many kids throughout Evansville. He always looked out for others, especially those who were less fortunate. If someone needed a ride or something to eat, you could always count on Fred to lend a helping hand. He had a larger-than-life personality that immediately lit up any room he walked into. He had a passion and love for high school athletics. If it involved a field, court, or track, Fred was there. The number of lives Fred impacted is immeasurable. He will always be remembered as a man who loved his family, and always put himself second.
Fred is survived by his wife, Monica (Artis) Helm of Evansville, IN; his children, Freddy Helm (Richell) of Evansville, IN, J'Juan Helm (Nicole) of Evansville, IN, Brandon Artis (Kassidy) of Evansville, IN, Jeremy Artis (Marissa) of Evansville, IN, Dontae Lawrence of Sanford, FL, India Williams (Tanner) of Evansville, IN, Ellis Lampkins, Jr., and James Cochran; mother, Donna (Helm) Williams of Evansville, IN; father, Fred Lee of Bellville, IL; sister, Sabrina Rice; brothers, Renaldo Helm, Talmon Haywood, and Walter Rice; many more brothers and sisters; grandchildren, Frederick Helm, III, J'Juan Helm, Jr., Jaden Helm, Alivia Helm, Jayda Lawrence, Kyran Artis, Marlee McGee, Aaliyah Helm, Liam Williams, Kingston Helm, Miller Lee Artis, and Malia Faye Artis; uncle, Larry Helm; nephew, DeMario Wright; several other nieces and nephews; cousin; Ken Poe; and best friend, Dave Harris.
Fred was preceded in death by his son, Jarrett Helm; grandmother, Laura Helm; uncle, Louis Helm; niece, Duanna Gary; nephew, Duane Gary; cousin, Arlynn Johnson; and great friend, Mike Owen.
A celebration Fred's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, February 27, 2023 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave., Evansville, IN 47711, with Pastor Anton Howard officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
