Fred's tenure with McShan Florist, Inc. began in 1967, following 18 years of hands-on experience at Hoffman's Florist and Gift Shop in Grand Prairie, Texas, owned by his parents. He grew up in the floral business. With an eye for design and a flair for style, Fred quickly moved into various managerial positions, including General Manager. Fred retired from full-time status (after 33 years) at McShan on September 8, 2000. In their McScanner Newsletter, they thanked Fred for his flare for design and extravagant Neiman Marcus Fortnight displays of the 70's, in transforming the downtown Dallas landmark into unique floral wonderland. Fred was always there to lend his touch. The McShan's were like family to him, starting with Lee McShan (the founder) and his son Bruce McShan. Bruce and Sheri. remains close friends of Roy & Fred. Fred was described as one of the kindest and most gentle individuals they had known. Fred was loved and respected by every side of his personality. He had the touch of the master's hands!
Teaching had always been one of Fred's strong points. Whether at publics schools, in his parent's shop, at McShan, assisting at trade seminars or while conducting Floral design at the Dallas Arboretum. Fred was a natural at sharing his technique with others. Fred was instinctively creative and at his best when he was free to design - his work was featured in the FTD Design book. Fred also served six years in the Air Force Reserves.
After retirement, Fred continued to be creative in the acquisition of fine antiques, unique collectibles, vintage and fine Native American turquoise jewelry, books, décor, and so much more. Until recently, he maintained leases at various Antique Malls where he sold his collections in spaces beautifully arranged. Roy and Fred traveled extensively to Europe and Russia in the 70's and then again in 2016-2018.
Roy would like to express his sincere thanks for the loving care provided by Lue Lungani, Darrell Jones, Staff at The Tradition Memory Care and Allstar Hospice.
