Frederick Lee Newcomb

CHARLOTTE – Frederick Lee Newcomb (Fred), of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday August 19, 2022.

Fred grew up in Roanoke, VA and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1958 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was a longtime employee of Duke Power and served as a Captain in the US Army Reserves until 1969.

Fred was happily married for almost 62 years to the love of his life who he met riding the bus in Roanoke. They loved playing tennis, traveling and especially regular trips to Wimbledon. Fred was a wonderful father to three children and grandfather of two. He was never happier than when around his family and many friends. He loved his children's and grandchildren's sporting events and was always their number one fan in all they pursued.

Fred was a member of Myers Park Methodist Church and a regular volunteer at Friendship Trays. He was an avid history buff and lover of movies who could not watch one without popcorn.

Fred is survived by his wife, Betty Lou; his three children Freddy Newcomb, MD, Laurie Wilson and her husband, Tom, Gary Newcomb; and two grandchildren, Sterling Wilson and Sheppard Wilson. Also surviving is his beloved Labrador, Bear. He was predeceased by his parents, Andrew Jackson Newcomb and Lela Bryan Newcomb; his brother Andrew Jackson Newcomb, Jr.; and sister Phyllis Anne East, and grandson Thomas Hampton Wilson, III.

A memorial service will be held at Myers Park Methodist Church on Friday, August 26 at 2:00pm. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service at the church.

Fred passed away after a short courageous battle with metastatic melanoma in the wonderful care of Hospice and the kind staff at the Stewart Health Center of the Cypress.
