Troy-Frederick Russell Onley, 62, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 24, 2025, in Staatsburg.
Born in Albany on November 7, 1962, he was the son of the late Harry E. Onley and Martha Jean Onley. Fred spent most of his life in Troy. He attended Columbia High School and later graduated from Albany High School. For many years, he worked diligently as a Draftsman for the New York State Office of General Services.
Fred was a beloved father, grandfather, and brother. He is survived by his devoted sons, Stephen and Patrick; his cherished granddaughters, Scarlet and Emma; and his siblings, Sherrie, Martha, Colleen, and Joe.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Eddie.
Fred will be remembered for his unique sense of humor and his creative spirit, which showed through in his memorable handmade Halloween costumes. Despite facing significant challenges in life, he found immense joy in his role as a grandfather, and his love for his grandchildren was undeniable. His distinct way of seeing the world and expressing care, though sometimes unconventional, left a lasting impression.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family on Monday, April 28, 2025 from 5pm to 7pm at the W.J. Lyons, Jr. Funeral Home, Rensselaer, to honor and celebrate Fred's life. A graveside service will be held the following morning at 10:00 am at New Rural Cemetery in East Greenbush.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Frederick's memory to the Brenden Butler Family Foundation, an organization dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for pediatric cancer patients. This cause holds special significance, as Fred was diagnosed with cancer at age 14 and navigated mental health challenges throughout his life. Donations can be made online at https://www.brendenbutlerfamilyfoundation.com/contact or via Venmo @brendenbutlerfamilyfoundation.
