Frederick Michael Silvers, MD, a savant in medicine and the arts, passionate father and loving husband, passed away in his Los Angeles, California home on October 19, 2025 at the age of 84.
Born in 1941 in Minneapolis, Dr. Silvers was known for his steadfast dedication to his patients throughout his nearly 60-year career as a psychiatrist, who specialized in psychopharmacology, Jungian psychoanalysis, and the spiritual significance of the psyche. He was a graduate of North High School in North Minneapolis, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota, and earned his medical degree from the UCSF School of Medicine. He completed his psychiatry residency at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and served as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. Dr. Silvers was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.
Dr. Silvers was fastidious in pursuit of his endeavors and bestowed his eclectic music taste upon his six children. An ATP-ranked professional tennis player, loyal Minnesota sports fan, jazz trumpeter, pianist, chess aficionado, and philosopher: Dr. Silvers was a Renaissance man. Rooted in Judaism and later baptized into Christianity, he followed a spiritual path open to many faiths.
Survived by his wife, Christine Staehelin Silvers; children, Richard (Holly Quist), Elizabeth, Robert, Joseph, Diana, and Sarah Silvers; sister Sherry Cook; cousin Mickey Bearman. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert Silvers and Miriam Levens Silvers Zukerman.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM PST (1:00pm Central Time) on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, which may also be viewed virtually, See direct link below.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the UCSF Medical Scholarship Fund or the University of Minnesota Scholarship Fund in Philosophy.
