Fredrick Brandt Obituary

Fredrick "Frito" Gerard Brandt, 66, of Mount Pleasant Township, formerly of Youngwood, passed away on Tuesday September 10, 2024. He was born on January 19, 1958, in Greensburg, the son of the late James and Wilma (Helman) Brandt. He was a graduate of Hempfield Area High School, Class of 1976 and a graduate of Slippery Rock University in 1982. Frito was a true outdoor enthusiast. He believed in protecting and giving back to nature. He worked as a Chesapeake Bay liaison specialist, a solid waste specialist, a water quality specialist and finally a sewage planning specialist with the Department of Enviromental Resources and he retired with 25 years of service to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He was a lifetime member of the NRA, a lifetime member of Hecla Sportsman Club, a member of the Hempfield Hunt Club, the Sportsman Association of Greensburg, Youngwood Sportsmans Association, the Hempfield Pheasant Club, the Mosquito Creek Sportsmans Club in Frenchville, Pa., and the Heath Township Sportsmans Club in Sigel, where he was the President for a few years. Frito also belonged to the A&B Club in Youngwood, the VFW Post 211 in Youngwood, the Brockway Sons of Italy and the East Huntingdon, Kecksburg and Hecla Fireman's Clubs. If you couldn't reach Frito on the phone or he wasn't at home, there was a great chance he was at his beloved camp "Big Oak". He always enjoyed being out in the woods hunting, fishing or standing around the fire having a good time with his numerous friends. Frito is survived by his best friend, Trica Fritz, his faithful sidekick, his dog, Brandy Brandt; his siblings, Beth Dague (Bruce Jr.), of Bethlehem, Kate Gribbin, of Greensburg, James Brandt (Barbara), of Youngwood and Becky Heffelfinger (Bill), of Greensburg. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. The family extends a special thank you to Frito's great friends, who were always there for him, John Koluder, Buzz Derco, Paul Robertson, Alan Crossland, Bob Olson, Gary Balog, Myron "Skooter" Hay, Rich Thomas and Howard Dunn. There will be a visitation for family and friends on Monday, Sept. 16, from 2-4 & 6-8 pm, in the C. Richard McCauley Funeral Home Inc. 101 S 4th Street, Youngwood. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 10 am. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 711 Depot Street, Youngwood. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of one's choice.

Rest in peace Fred! Fred had joined Greg Orner and I on our first Elk hunting adventure in Colorado and showed us around the Routt National Forest, which started a tradition of going there and other places in Colorado in search of bull elk. I remember when Fred chose to stay on the other side of Mount Oliphant overnight without any food or water. Unfortunately, we got a foot and 1/2 of snow that evening. Fred said he built a small fire under a lodgepole pine and took a few swigs of his beloved Yukon Jack to make it through. I was fortunate enough to have known Fred since Junior high and remember him tobogganing down Wyman's hill and building fires. Fred, Greg, and I also went to Slippery Rock and enjoyed hunting with him there. I actually played football with Fred at Slippery Rock and remember one day at practice Fred telling me, "Jimmy Watts, if you hold me one more time, I am going to rip your arms off". Talk about the pot calling the kettle black, Fred was notorious for holding. My condolences for all Fred's friends and family and Tricia Fritz.

Dear Tricia and the family of Fred,

My husband, John, and I are sorry to hear about Fred´s passing, especially at such a young age. He was a formidable presence at our AFSCME Local 2459 meetings; his height, size and cowboy hat, were hard to miss when he entered the meeting room, but it also was because his voice and manner of speaking, and his unwavering eye contact when doing so that made all attendees listen whenever he spoke about union issues. In reality, Fred was easy to talk to, and I found his ideas on making and meeting union goals to be creative and comprehensive! I am glad that Fred and you, Tricia, participated in the 2014 AFSCME convention held in Chicago with several of our Local´s officers. We have no doubt he will be missed by all who knew and loved him!
