It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Freeman 'Freeze' Thomas Jr.
Freeman was born on July 31, 1955, in Battle Creek, MI, to L.E. Henson and Freeman Thomas Sr. He attended St. Philip Catholic School and graduated in 1973.
On December 31, 1983, Freeman married his best friend and soulmate, Marsha and together they shared 46 beautiful years filled with love and laughter.
He devoted 30 years to the VA hospital, beginning his career as a nurse's assistant in the psychiatric ward before becoming an exceptional phlebotomist-one of the best they ever had. He retired in 2011, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and care.
Freeman was also deeply committed to his community. He volunteered his time for various events, including Christmas parades, 'Blues, Brews, and BBQs,' and more. In 1995, he began volunteering as On-Field Security at the 'Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival,' where he became such a beloved figure that he was honored with his own street sign, "Freeman's Freeway," in 2001. He later transitioned into inventory distribution, continuing his invaluable contributions to the event.
In his free time, Freeman cherished moments spent with his wife, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. He loved brewing beer, attending outings, and never missed an opportunity to hit the dance floor and get his groove on.
Freeman is survived by his wife, Marsha Thomas; sister, Georgia Mae Washington; step-son, Chris Hebner; grandchildren, Nate (Elena) Hebner, Bree (Tiffany) Hebner; and great grandchildren, MaKenna, Brynlee, Logan, Abigail, Hunter, and Gavin.
Freeman is preceded in death by his mother, L.E. Henson; father, Freeman Thomas Sr.; and brother, Glenn Thomas.
Freeman touched the lives of so many with his boundless love, compassion, and unwavering sense of humor. He created a world of safety and acceptance for those around him, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, selflessness, and loyalty. His presence brought light and comfort to his family, friends, and community, and he will forever hold a cherished place in their hearts.
Rest in peace Freeman 'Freeze' 'Granddad' Thomas JR. You will be missed and remembered always.
Visitation for Freeman will be held at Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service on Monday, February 17, 2025 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
Freeman's funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at 1:00 pm. A graveside service will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Immediately following the graveside there will be a celebration of life at Territorial Brewing Company.

One of the finest men I have had the opportunity to know ....and likely the best phlebotomists ever....
The world and our city were much better places because of Freeman....
My most sincere condolences to Marsha and all of their family.....

Freeman was the new person in school, and was a friend of my older brother through the Explorer organization, part of the Boy Scouts of America. One day after moving back to Battle Creek, after being away for over 20 years, I went to the VA with my new husband and that´s where I heard that friendly voice and smile that only Freeman had. I am thankful to have known such a kind hearted person as Freeman. He will always be in our hearts. God bless his soul.
Sincerely,
Xenia Rose Schafer and Herb /Stinger Schafer
