Freida Levine Sokol, born July 3, 1934, in Columbia, SC, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2026, after a short, courageous battle with cancer. She faced her illness with strength, dignity, and faith, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her graveside service will be held Monday, February 23, 2026, in Brith Sholom Beth Israel Cemetery (Maryville), at 11:00 am. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Freida moved to Charleston at a young age and called it home for the rest of her life. She was a dedicated wife and mother, and an active member of many local organizations, including the BSBI Sisterhood, Hadassah, and the Charleston Jewish Federation.
She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Joseph "Joe" Sokol, whom she deeply loved; her parents, Lilla and Max Levine; her brother, Lt. Freddie Levine; her sister, Sandra Levine Kaufman; her grandson, Alexander Theodore Nakios; and Sarah Murrell.
She is survived by her four children: Edmond Sokol, Eve Sokol, Freddie Sokol Schneider, and Pauline Sokol Nakios (and husband Thomas, who was like a son to Freida); her nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Herbert Rosner; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Martha Williams and Gwen King for their compassionate care.
Donations in her honor can be made to Chabad of Charleston and the Low Country (477 Mathis Ferry Rd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464), Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue (182 Rutledge Ave, Charleston, SC 29403), or the charity of your choice.
