Fumiko Makita Davis, 94, of
Rockingham, NC, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at Hospice Haven on the evening of Friday, November 21. She was born on January 2,1931 to Fumio and Haruko Makita in Tokyo, Japan. She attended Tokyo University for three years, majoring in World History, before meeting the love of her life, Hoyle Eugene (Gene) Davis. At the time of their meeting, Gene was stationed on a ship at the US Navy Base Yokosuka, Japan port. They married and had a baby while still in Japan. When Gene was honorably discharged from the navy, he returned to his hometown of Rockingham with his young wife and two-month-old daughter. Fumiko made Rockingham her home for the remainder of her life, building a life rooted in love, hard work, and community. She retired after 27 years of dedicated service from Industrial Sheet Metal, where she worked in cost accounting.
Fumiko will be lovingly remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother whose life was defined by quiet sacrifice, steadfast love, and unwavering commitment to her family. She enjoyed gardening and being involved in the schools her children attended, always serving as a grade parent and member of the PTO. She cherished the friendships she formed at her church, bridge clubs, line-dancing groups, and work; however, she found her true joy in spending time with her children and grandchildren. She will forever be remembered for her integrity, loyalty, quiet intelligence, humility, and ability to make every person feel valued.
Fumiko was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Gene Davis; her parents, a sister; two brothers; and her precious granddaughter, Avery Elizabeth Davis. She is survived by her children: Vivian Davis Hilton (Lex), Hoyle Eugene (Gene) Davis, Jr., and Elisa (Lisa) Diaz Davis; and by her cherished grandchildren: Lex Hilton, Jr. (Brooke), Kathryn (Kakki) Hilton Schertzer (Hayden), Katherine (Kate) Davis, Paton Davis, Davis Hilton (Cailey), Drake Diaz, Drew Diaz, Graeson Diaz Johnson (Isaac), and Hoyle Eugene (Trace) Davis, III. She also leaves behind six beloved great-grandchildren who will carry her love and memory forward.
A memorial service will be held in honor of Mrs. Fumiko Davis on Tuesday, November 25 at First Baptist Church, Rockingham with Dr. Allison Farrah officiating. The family will receive friends and visitors between 3:00 PM-4:00 PM at the church with the service commencing at 4:00 PM.
