G. Virginia Hughes, 94, of Carmi, passed away on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Wabash Christian Village in Carmi. She was born on July 11, 1929, in Norris City, Illinois, the daughter of Arnold and Gladys (Ward) Gidcumb. Virginia married William Houston Hughes on September 1, 1956, and he preceded her in death on March 24, 2013. She was a sales rep for Studio Girl Cosmetics and later for Celebrity Jewelery. She later went on to work at Walmart in the jewelry department and then as a caregiver. Virginia was a member of First Baptist Church and later attended Cherry St. Baptist Church in Carmi. She enjoyed sewing, doing hair and makeup, and most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and expressing her faith.
Virginia is survived by her children, Beverly (John) Keller of Marietta, GA, Doug (Sylviane) Hall of Houston, TX, David (Gay) Hughes of Carmi, IL, Tina (Steve) Riley of Owensville, IN, Debbie Stevens of Nederland, CO, and Bill Hughes of Harrison, AR; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, William Houston Hughes, Virginia is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Kevin Hughes; and two brothers, Dwight Gidcumb and James "Toddy" Gidcumb.
Funeral services for Virginia Hughes will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, with burial at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. Family and friends may visit from 11:00 a.m. until time of service on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Virginia's memory to Hagee Ministries at P.O. Box 1400, San Antonio, TX. 78295, and will also be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, who is in charge of arrangements.
