Gail Linette Denefield, a devoted mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, departed this life on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the age of 71. Gail was born on December 12, 1953, in
Jacksonville, Florida, where she spent her entire life, embracing the community and nurturing bonds that would last a lifetime.
Gail was the beloved daughter of Herbert Hughes, Sr. and Elsie Hughes, who taught her the values of hard work, kindness, and faith. She grew up surrounded by the love of her family, including her siblings, Herbert Hughes Jr., Belinda Bellamy, and Larry Gadling, all of whom have preceded her in death. Gail was married to her loving and devoted husband Erno Denefield for over thirty years who also preceded her in death along with her step-daughter, Pamela Burden; and three step grandchildren, Brian Green, Randal Green, and Jerome Ashley Jr. In her quiet strength and unwavering spirit, she has overcome many challenges, yet always remained a pillar of support for those she loved.
She was a devoted Christian whose faith guided her through life's trials and triumphs. Her commitment to her beliefs was not just a personal journey; it was a tapestry woven into the lives of her children and grandchildren, instilling in them the same values of love and perseverance.
Gail's career as a United States Postal Worker spanned over thirty years, during which she dedicated herself to serving her community. Her genuine smile and warm words brightened the days of countless patrons who frequented her post office. She took pride in her work, and her colleagues admired her work ethic and dedication.
Gail was a loving mother to her biological children, Lateef Denefield and Charity Denefield, and a caring stepmother to Glendale Ashley, Wanda Green, Monica Denefield, Terrance Denefield (Sue), and Donovan Denefield (Dede). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Jibria Denefield, Jiniyah Denefield, Jabari Denefield, and Jahzara Denefield, as well as her step-grandchildren, Tamara Ashley, Augustus Ashley, Alton Burden Jr. (Dolly), Alexander Burden, Erica Denefield, Joshua Denefield, and Justin Barron. Each grandchild held a special place in her heart, and she delighted in showering them with love and attention. Gail's passion for "loving on her grandchildren" was evident, as she spent many joyful hours creating cherished memories with them.
Gail is survived by her two beloved children, step-children, grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many sorrowing friends. She is also survived by her siblings, Claudette Thayer and Denise McCullough, and special friends who enriched her life, including Juanita Collier, Karen Grimes, and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Jackson.
In her personal life, Gail enjoyed hobbies that revolved around her loved ones. Whether it was hosting family gatherings or simply enjoying quiet moments with her grandchildren, her home was a haven filled with laughter and love. She was known for her generous spirit and selfless nature, always putting the needs of others before her own.
As we say goodbye to Gail Linette Denefield, we remember her not only for the life she lived but also for the love she gave so freely. Her indelible mark on the hearts of many will live on in the stories shared and the lives she touched.
Gail Linette Denefield will be profoundly missed but forever cherished in the memories of those who loved her. Rest in peace, dear Gail. Your spirit will continue to shine brightly in our hearts.
