Gail Mirrow Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Thomas I. Wisniewski Funeral Home, Inc. on Jan. 13, 2026.
Dr. Gail S. Mirrow, a pioneering educator, visionary leader, and cherished matriarch, passed away on January 13, 2026, at the age of 83. A woman of boundless energy and intellect, Gail spent her life breaking barriers, building communities, and creating adventures for anyone she encountered.
Gail's professional legacy is one of historic significance. She earned a Doctorate of Education from the University of Toledo. She was among the first female education administrators in Northwest Ohio, paving the way for generations of women in leadership. Over her distinguished 37-year career, she served as the Principal of Sylvania Southview High School, the Assistant Superintendent of Washington Local Schools, and finally as the Superintendent of Ottawa Hills Local Schools. Under her guidance, the Ottawa Hills district earned national acclaim, including the No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School award in 2004.
Her retirement in 2007 marked not an end, but a vibrant new chapter. A lifelong learner, Gail became a glass artist at the Toledo Museum of Art's Glass Pavilion. Through her studio, Giro Glassworx, she produced hundreds of unique kiln-fired pieces, channeling the same precision and passion into art that she once gave to education.
Gail's faith and community were her anchors. She served as President of Temple Shomer Emunim. In addition, Gail served as an Ambassador to the Toledo Museum of Art and served as a mentor to elementary school children in Toledo Public Schools through Partners in Education.
Above all, Gail was a creator of memories, and was at her happiest when hosting or gathering her family and friends together. She believed that life was meant to be an adventure, and she traveled the world with her friends and family, always ensuring that every trip and gathering was filled with meaning and laughter.
She is survived by her devoted husband and partner of 62 years, Jay Mirrow, and her brother Jake (Monica) Simpson. Her legacy lives on through her sons, Joe (Monica) Mirrow and Art (Stephanie) Mirrow; her beloved grandchildren, Rachel (Mike), Andrew (Ashley), Ben (Mya), and Sarah; and her great-grandson, Arnie. Gail also leaves behind a family she held as dearly as her own, the Yalcinkayas: Muco, Mehtap, Jon, and Sean.
Funeral Service: Sunday, January 18, 2026, at 10:30 AM at Temple Shomer Emunim, 6453 Sylvania Ave, Sylvania, OH. with interment following at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions: In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Gail's honor to Temple Shomer Emunim, Partners in Education, or the Toledo Museum of Art, organizations that remained close to her heart throughout her life.

Gail hasn´t been my supervisor for over two decades, yet I still talk about her almost every week. I train leaders in Fortune 500 companies today, and whenever I teach what true Servant Leadership looks like, she´s the example I hold up. She saw people not just for who they were, but for who they could become - and she pushed us toward that potential with kindness, honesty, and unwavering belief.

She was generous with her wisdom, gentle in spirit, and still the toughest supervisor I ever had. She once told me she pushed me because she knew I had more to give, and she was right. That lesson shaped my life.

Thank you, Gail, for helping me - and so many others - discover what we had within us. To Jay Mirrow and the entire family, please know that her stories, her lessons, and her spirit continue to live on in the people she shaped.

A life well lived.

Rest in peace, strong servant.

Love,

Casey Reason

Besides all the wonderful things she did, I remember her as taking the time every night after work to visit her mother. Gail was an amazing woman in every way!
