Gale Dickau Obituary

BRISTOL

Gale Dickau, 79, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2026. She was born on October 24, 1946, in Bristol, Connecticut, the beloved daughter of the late Elvio and Eunice DiSabato. She was the devoted wife of the late Jack Dickau of Forestville.

Gale is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Adam Taylor of Sandy Hook; her grandsons, Joshua Eliot Taylor and Nathan Jack Taylor; her sisters, Teresa DiSabato of The Villages, Florida, and Elvera Howard of Wellesley, Massachusetts; her niece, Colleen Howard Shields and her husband Tony; and her grand-nephews, Alden and Cameron Mothander. Besides her parents and husband, Gale was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Richie Howard.

A student - and teacher - from the very beginning, Gale absorbed the world around her with keen insight and remarkable awareness. As a child, she was often ushered out of the kitchen to "entertain the company" while dinner was prepared, regaling guests with stories and sharp observations. Her quick wit and natural storytelling captivated her audience, foreshadowing a lifelong gift for educating and engaging others.

Gale was a proud graduate of Saint Anthony's School in Bristol, attending from kindergarten through high school, and of the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1968 and her master's degree in 1978.

She began her teaching career at Bristol Central High School, stepping into the classroom shortly after welcoming Jennifer just one month before the start of the 1972 school year. Gale remained at Bristol Central for her entire career, retiring in 2017 after 49 years - a Ram fan all the way.

Her commitment and excellence were recognized throughout her career, including being named Bristol Public Schools Teacher of the Year in 1992 - 1993, receiving the Milken Educator Award in 1993, and being honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Saint Joseph in 1994.

Through her passion for teaching and creative writing, Gale inspired generations of students. Her classroom was a place of encouragement, imagination, and possibility - and her influence extended far beyond the walls of Bristol Central High School.

Following her retirement, Gale continued her work with students as Director and Writer-in-Residence of The Writing Initiative at Bristol Central High School. In this role, she worked closely with staff and students to foster a deeper appreciation for the art of writing while expanding access to theater performances, workshops, contests, scholarships, and creative opportunities - further reinforcing her lifelong dedication to empowering students and their futures.

Outside the classroom, Gale found joy in the simple and meaningful moments of life. She spent countless hours perfecting her famous fried dough and pasta fagioli, cheering the Red Sox and UConn hoops with Jack, and most proudly embracing her role as a devoted grandmother to Josh and Nate. Whether in person or from afar, she rarely missed a concert, author's tea, wrestling match, baseball game, or graduation.

A natural storyteller, Gale could spend hours sharing memories with anyone willing to listen - stories of card games with friends, humorous moments from her years in the classroom, and remarkably detailed accounts of her family's history. A lover of the written word and the lives behind it, she cherished the past while remaining deeply grateful for the present. Through years of travel across Europe with her students, she fostered cultural curiosity and global understanding yet always returned to what mattered most: her family, her friends, and a good laugh shared over a homemade dinner.

She was a warm presence to everyone who entered the room, always eager to ask how you were and share a laugh or two before you went on your way.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at O'Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Ave., Bristol, starting at 10 a.m., with memorial tributes at 1 p.m.

Our condolences go out to Jennifer and family for your loss of a very special Mom who was an educator, traveler, mentor, colleague and inspiration to so many young people under her tutelage. Linda and I are most thankful to Gail for giving us the "travel bug", because of her inspiration we have spent many years traveling in Europe and other destinations. I remember fondly our faculty writing sessions which gave us a chance to write some of our favorite anecdotes. And who can forget the faculty presentation of "We are the world"...so many great memories! Thank you Gail. May you rest in peace ! Bob and Linda Fallon

I remember Mrs Dickau from my years at Central ,80-84. She was also in charge of NHS. She used to take student trips to Europe. Wonderful teacher!
