A funeral service for Mr. Gareth Methvin will be held on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Athens Community Church. Dr. Johnny Baker and Rev. Perry Anderson will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Mt. Mariah Cemetery.
Gareth was born March 9, 1936, in the Hurricane Community to Alton and Wilota Whitman Methvin Hebert. He entered into rest on December 20, 2023, in Shreveport with his loving family by his side. Gareth was a remarkably interesting conversationalist. He enjoyed talking with everyone. He enjoyed fishing and sports, as well as making beautiful counted cross stitch pieces. Gareth served his country in the United States Air Force in Japan during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a salesman and in marketing for IBM and Xerox, as well as worked as a regional sales manager for Boston Whaler Boats. After retirement, Gareth and Justine lived for several years in Pennsylvania, where he worked in a call center for Medicare. Gareth was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Gareth is preceded by his father Alton Methvin, mother Wilota Methvin Hebert, stepfather Algie Hebert, sister Delane Murphy, and by his uncle, Arvis Whitman.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 25 years, Justine Baker Methvin, daughters Alicia Methvin, and Marie Methvin, step children Kim Davidson Walley and husband Dennis R. Walley, and Paul Kane Davidson, grandchildren Crystal, Joshua, Nicole, Caleb, Quincy, and Candace, great grandchildren Josiah, Autum, Silas, Destiny, Dean, Mimi, Michayla, Ella, Abigail, and Aubry, great-great grandchild Damien, half-brother Reggie Hebert, and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving family and friends.
Honoring Gareth as pallbearers will be Paul Cook, Caleb Sullivan, Tommy Baker, Ragan Baker, Matt Baker, and Joel Murphy. Honorary pallbearers will be James Baker, Roderick Cook, AG Murphy, and Sno Spurlock.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to The Gideons International in memory of Gareth Methvin, at gideons.org or at The Gideons International, PO Box 97251, Washington DC 20090.
