Garner Holmes, 92, of Cookeville, Tennessee, and formerly of Baxter, Tennessee, departed his earthly home on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at his farm. He is now two-stepping with the angels in his heavenly home in glory.

Garner was born on Thursday, October 6, 1932, in Baxter, Tennessee, to the late Ander Jackson and Victoria (Jared) Holmes.

Garner attended Baxter Seminary, and after graduation, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he worked at Cadillac Motors. After being laid off, he went to Harlan, Kentucky, attending a vocational school, learning how to detail vehicles. After moving to Baxter, Tennessee, he worked at McCords until his retirement in 1994.

He loved the outdoors and loved farming on his farmland. He also deer hunted, as well as fished with his son-in-law, John Kanable.

Garner is survived by his wife of 69 years, Shirley Brucille (Metcalfe) Holmes, his adopted son-in-law, John Kanable, and his wife, Cindy; Grandson, Andrew Holmes and his wife, Bethanie; Great-Grandsons, Cayden, Maddux, and Tucker Holmes; Sister-in-law, Carolyn Brown.

In addition to his parents, Garner was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Bruce Holmes; his daughter, Dana Elizabeth (Holmes) Kanable; two brothers and six sisters.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to Mustard Seed Ranch or Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The family would like to mention a special thank you to Garners' nephew, Robert (Bobby) Holmes, his nieces and nephews, for their support of love, prayers, and phone calls during his illness, Liz of the VA, and all of his caregivers at the Hospice of Tennessee.

Family and Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life honoring Garner on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 1:00 pm at the Baxter United Methodist Church.
