Rev. Garvey Charles Atlee Ince, affectionately known as "Atlee," was born on November 24, 1949, in Foursquare, St. Philip, Barbados, to the late Marjorie and Gordon Ince. He was one of five siblings, including the late Turian Rawlins, Pamela Ince-Taylor, Aileen Ince, and Hartley Holder.
Rev. Garvey was educated at St. Patrick's Elementary Boys School and the Modern High School where he excelled in academics. He attended Erdiston Teachers College and became an elementary school teacher. As a pastime, he loved to play cricket.
Rev. Garvey accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and savior at an early age. He was a member of Foursquare Nazarene Church and became the assistant superintendent of the Sunday School. He was also an active participant in Youth for Christ International.
In 1973, Rev. Garvey immigrated to the United States to pursue a degree in electrical engineering at Newark College of Engineering (now the New Jersey Institute of Technology, NJIT). After earning his bachelor's degree, he enjoyed a long and successful career in the technology field, holding positions at AT&T, Verizon Communications, Bellcore (Telcordia), and Lucent Technologies (Nokia). Also in 1973, he married the love of his life, Mary Ince. This union produced two daughters: Camille and Janelle.
Rev. Garvey was a 50-year member of St. James AME Church in
Newark, NJ. He actively served in many roles over the years; including singing in the Hattie L. Coppick Chorale, Co-Ed Usher Board, and Steward Board. He also held many roles with the St. James AME Federal Credit Union including the title of director.
In 1978, Rev. Garvey and Mary both graduated from the Bethel Bible Institute of the Bronx, NY, under the tutelage of Rev. Ohanio and Rev. Mary Williams. In 2002, Rev. Garvey accepted the call to ministry under the leadership of Rev. Dr. William D. Watley. He graduated with a Master of Divinity from Drew Theological School. He faithfully served as Minister of Finance and Chief Financial Officer of the St. James AME Church. He later became Minister of Visitation of the Sick as well as the founder of the "Can-Survive" Ministry. He was a regular attendee at Men's Bible Study and assisted Rev. Reginald Clark as needed. Rev. Garvey lived the testimony he preached, inspiring others through his unwavering faith during his battle with cancer.
Rev. Garvey traveled extensively on business trips and visited every continent except Antarctica. He established programs which invested in the economic and spiritual growth of his home country of Barbados. At home, he loved watching cricket, wrestling, and a variety of classic sitcoms. He also enjoyed a good game of dominoes, Phase 10, solitaire, Sudoku.
Rev. Garvey and Mary were married for 50 years and were blessed with a loving and extended family. He loved his wife who stayed by his side throughout his health challenges. He was immensely proud of his daughters, Camille and Janelle. He especially loved his granddaughter and often remarked that "If he knew grandchildren were so much fun, he would have had them first."
Rev. Garvey leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Mary of Rockaway, NJ; two loving daughters Camille Bonds of South Plainfield, NJ, and Janelle Ince of Dover, NJ; one son-in-law, Keith Bonds, Jr. (who he affectionately called son); two sisters, Pamela Ince-Taylor (Leon) and Aileen Ince of Dover, NJ; one brother, Hartley Holder of Barbados; one granddaughter, Michelle (the apple of his eye); and a host of nieces, nephews, god-children, relatives, and friends.
