Gary Chickering, 77, of Winterset, passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at Banner Del E Webb Medical Center in Sun City West, Arizona.
Gary Ralph Chickering was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on October 29, 1945, the son of Herbert Ross Chickering and Helen (Roberts) Chickering. Gary graduated from Winterset High School in 1963 and went on to receive his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Wichita State University and his M.B.A. from Drake University. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Era. He was united in marriage to Louise Kalinoff on April 4, 1970, in Stillwater, Minnesota.
Gary worked in upper management for several manufacturing companies during his career. For many years, he was co-owner of Des Moines-Winterset Monument Company.
Gary enjoyed golfing and taking golf trips with "the boys" and also with other couples. He was a good cook and always had new recipes to try on the grill or in the oven! Fishing, playing card games and participating in poker groups were favorite pastimes.
Much joy was found in spending time with each of his grandchildren (all of whom are good visitors!) discussing sports (Iowa State, soccer, golf, field hockey), flying airplanes and hearing about their activities in school.
He is survived by his wife, Louise "Weezie" Chickering; sons, John F. (Stephanie) Chickering and Ross C. (Connie) Chickering; three grandsons, Nolan, Jacob and Miles, a granddaughter, Reese; sister, Sherry Lathrum (Ed); brother, Chet Chickering (Susan); sister-in-law, Becky Goodwin.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, H. Ross Chickering and Helen Goodwin and stepfather, Fred Goodwin; granddaughter, Jenna Chickering; half-brother, Vince Goodwin.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in the summer. Burial will take place at the Winterset Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Scholten Science Scholarship, Winterset Education Foundation, PO Box 30, Winterset, IA 50273.
