Gary Allan Craig born June 13, 1944 in Warrensburg, MO passed away peacefully September 17, 2025 at his home in
Venice, FL.He is preceded in death by his parents Ernest W. Craig, Eula Margaret (Griffey) Craig and Patsy Ann (Ditty) Craig, his sister and her husband, JoLynn and Leon Rigby and his daughter, Heather. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, his sister, Dianne Hailey, his son, Curtis (Alisa), his daughter, Jennifer (Todd) Birdsong, five grandchildren, Laurel (Patrick) Driscoll, Stella, Corbin, Connor, and Brenden, three great-grandchildren, his nephews Craig Rigby and son Jack and Patrick (Dana) Rigby and their children Tate and Greenlee.Gary was a 1962 graduate of Olathe High School in Olathe, KS. In 1966 Gary graduated from Kansas State College of Pittsburg, Pittsburg, KS with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. While there he was a member of the Zeta Iota Chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He received a Master of Arts in Education from George Washington University in Washington, DC.Gary taught high school in Kansas for three years before joining the Army in 1969. While in the Army he was assigned to General Westmoreland's staff at the Pentagon. After his honorable discharge he worked for the Department of Navy Comptroller, Health and Human Services and lastly for General Services Administration in Washington, DC. Upon retirement he received the Administrator's Exceptional Service Award in recognition of outstanding accomplishments during his 30 years of service.In 1999, Gary and Phyllis moved to Hermann, a small town in the wine country of Missouri. He taught second grade at St. George's Catholic School. Later as a substitute teacher for the Gasconade County school district he taught all grade levels. Gary was most proud of teaching driver's education and having a positive influence on his students.Gary was a devoted aficionado of the golden era of music. The timeless melodies of the 1950's and 60's filled his days with joy and nostalgia. He was also an avid collector of autographed books, especially those chronicling military history. He cherished their stories of valor and strategy. Gary could often be found losing track of time in the aisles of used book and record shops, unearthing hidden treasures. His enthusiasm and delight for these hobbies left a lasting melody in the hearts of those who knew him.As a member of the VFW NO-VEL Post 159, he enjoyed time with friends of the Monday "Liar's Lunch" and will be remembered for his colorful recollections of experiences and adventures through out his lifetime. Missed and loved forever by his family and friends.Gary was a member of Venice Presbyterian Church where a celebration of life will be held January 30, 2026 at 2 pm.
