Gary Daugherty Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hampton Cove Funeral Home Cemetery & Crematory on Jan. 27, 2026.
Gary Daugherty, 89, of Huntsville, Alabama, went home to be with the
Lord on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, surrounded by his wife, children,
and grandchildren.
Gary shared 65 beautiful years of marriage with his devoted wife and
best friend, Choo Ja Daugherty, a love story that began in Korea and
endured across continents, decades, and every season of life. Together
they built a family that brought him endless pride and joy. He is
lovingly remembered by his children, Kim Daugherty (Susan Daugherty)
and Sondra Ellison (Mark Ellison); and by his grandchildren, Emily
Ellison, Kayla Ellison, Daniel Daugherty, and Sarah Daugherty, each of
whom held a special place in his heart.
Born and raised in Baxter, Kentucky, Gary grew up in a bustling
household with seven brothers and three sisters, an upbringing that
shaped his deep appreciation for family, laughter, and connection. His
sense of adventure led him to proudly serve his country, first in the
United States Marine Corps, where he developed a lifelong love of
travel, with duty stations in Formosa and Okinawa. He later continued
his service in the United States Army for 18 years, serving in Korea,
Italy, and Germany. It was during his time in Korea that Gary met Choo
Ja, the woman who would become the great love of his life.
After retiring from the military, Gary fulfilled a lifelong dream by
purchasing a farm in Liberty, Kentucky, where he built the home he and
Choo Ja enjoyed for 43 wonderful years. The farm was a place of peace,
hard work, and countless cherished memories. In 2020, they moved to
Huntsville, Alabama, where Gary continued to enjoy time with family
and make new friends.
Gary had a rare gift for making people feel welcome. He loved
traveling, meeting new people, telling jokes, and turning strangers
into friends. Most of all, he loved God, and his strong faith guided
his life, sustained him through every chapter, and gave him unwavering
hope and peace.
Gary's life was rich with purpose, service, love, and faith. He leaves
behind a legacy of kindness, devotion, and joy that will continue to
live on in all who were blessed to know him.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Hampton Cove
Funeral Home, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a funeral service to
follow at 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place immediately afterward at
the same location.
