Gary Leroy Dirks, 78, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family at Brookdale East in Wichita. Gary was born on December 13, 1946, in Hillsboro, Kansas, to Gustave George and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Dirks. He grew up in Valley Center, attending local schools, and from a young age was known for his quiet nature, sharp mind, and gentle demeanor. After high school, he pursued his education at Wichita State University, where he majored in Chemistry-setting the foundation for a lifetime dedicated to science, service, and teaching. In September 1971, Gary answered the call to serve his country when he was drafted into the United States Navy during the Vietnam era. His years in the Navy were marked by dedication, leadership, and integrity. Rising through the ranks to Lieutenant, he served aboard the USS Forrestal until August of 1974 and later received his honorable discharge in August of 1982. His military service instilled in him a deep sense of discipline and duty that would carry through every chapter of his life. Following his service, Gary devoted his career to the field of forensic science with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation in Great Bend, lending his knowledge and precision to the pursuit of justice. He then spent many years with the Johnson County, Kansas, Crime Lab, ultimately retiring in 2003 as its Director. His expertise and leadership not only advanced the lab's work but also influenced countless colleagues and students. After working in Johnson County, Gary then shared his passion for science as a Chemistry instructor at Johnson County Junior College, where he inspired and mentored future generations. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gary was a man of quiet generosity and deep kindness. He approached life with a peaceful spirit, a quick wit, and a thoughtful mind. Those who knew him often remarked on his intelligence, but equally on his humility and warmth. He was a true gentleman-steady, respectful, and always considerate of others. Gary found joy in life's simple and steady rhythms. He loved tending to his garden, watching things grow under his care, and spending time with the people who mattered most to him. His presence brought a sense of calm to those around him, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his beloved significant other, Kathleen Ashford; his sister, Connie Dirks; and many nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Elizabeth; his sister, Linda "Dirks" Grafton; and his nephews, Jason Davis Keeton and Keeton Isaac Jeffries. A graveside service and inurnment with military honors will be held at Winfield Veteran's Cemetery at a later date. Gary's life was a testament to service, knowledge, kindness, and quiet strength. Though he has gone from our sight, his legacy will live on-in the lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely.
