Gary Stringham Edmonds, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Layton, Utah on September 4, 2025, at the age of 88 years. Loved ones surrounded him as he returned to his Heavenly Father.
Gary was born on November 27, 1936, in West Bountiful, Utah, to Raymond Dewitt and Martha Barber Edmonds. He grew up with a deep love of faith, family, and country that would guide his life. After graduating from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree, he faithfully served in the National Guard and Civil Air Patrol, reflecting his strong sense of patriotism and service.
On July 7, 1961, Gary married the love of his life, Leona Adams, in the Manti, Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together, they built a life of devotion, faith, family, and service. They raised their family in West Bountiful, Utah; Naperville, Illinois; Scottsdale, Arizona; and later moved to Layton, Utah.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gary served in many callings, including Bishop in both West Bountiful, Utah, and Scottsdale, Arizona, and as Stake High Counselor. He dedicated two years to the Western Canadian Mission as a young man, and later he and Leona served together in the Australia Adelaide Mission and at the LDS Employment Center Mission, where they taught career development and shared their love of the gospel. He was loved by all he served.
Gary also gave of his time and talents in his community. His passions brought joy to many. He loved family history, church history, and the history of West Bountiful City. He served as a West Bountiful City Councilman and was known for his integrity and patriotism. A lifelong enthusiast of aviation and flight, he enjoyed building and launching rockets with his children and grandchildren. This tradition has continued through generations. He loved flying with the Civil Air Patrol and proudly flew the maiden flight in his grandson Britt’s airplane. He had an incredible singing voice and blessed many lives through his music. Known for his humor, Gary loved to tell jokes to everyone he met. He was also a loyal and spirited fan of BYU football.
Above all, Gary cherished his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Leona; their children Bruce (Collette) Edmonds, Sherry (Ryan) Evans, Shauna (Steve) Remmers, Jana (Gary) Acton, and Heather Edmonds; sisters Kathy (Richard) Atwood and Rayone Adams; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Ronald David Edmonds, his parents, five sisters, and four brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road, Layton, Utah. Friends and family may visit prior to services from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Lindquist Memorial Park at Layton.
Gary’s legacy of faith, service, humor, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Above all, he wanted to be remembered for his unfailing testimony of Jesus Christ. Until we meet again.
