Gary Gates Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lafollette's Chapel - Burns on Mar. 12, 2026.
Gary Gene Gates, 80, of Burns, Oregon, passed away on March 4, 2026.

Gary was born on June 22, 1945, in Portland, Oregon, to Wilker and Jean Gates. He spent much of his life in Oregon, where he built a life centered around hard work, independence, and family.

Gary proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Following his service, he worked as an iron worker, a profession that reflected his strength, resilience, and dedication.

A single father, Gary devoted himself to raising his family and was a steady presence in the lives of those who knew him. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and found peace in gardening. He also enjoyed baking and was known to share his creations with family and friends. Though often a solitary and quiet man, Gary loved a good conversation and never shied away from a thoughtful debate.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Wilker and Jean Gates, and his siblings Richard Gates, Bill Gates, Wilker "Beep" Gates, and Cindi Gates.

He is survived by his siblings Velna Schilling, Tom Gates, John Gates, and Dan Gates; his children Dawn Gates and Teresa Smith; his grandchildren Tyler Rowley, Crystal Short, Tasha Huwe, Nathan Veltrie Jr., and Chase Bolin; and his great-grandchildren Avah and Rhonan Short, Emma and Ethan Rowley, and Raven Bolin.

Gary will be remembered for his quiet strength, independent spirit, and the love he carried for his family
