Gary Lee Gerdes, age 81, passed peacefully from this life on Friday, February 20, 2026.
Gary was born on September 26, 1944, in Sterling, Illinois, to Edwin and Irene (Riley) Gerdes. He grew up with a love for the outdoors and an appreciation for simple, meaningful things - qualities that remained with him throughout his life.
Gary dedicated many years of his career to Winn-Dixie, where he served as a produce manager. He took pride in his work and in providing for his family.
A creative spirit at heart, Gary enjoyed arts and crafts and was especially known for making Christmas trees and flower arrangements from pinecones. He found peace in nature and, in his younger years, enjoyed hunting duck, pheasant, and geese. He had a special admiration for eagles.
Gary was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Sally Anne Cole; his parents, Edwin and Irene Gerdes; and his brothers, David and Paul Gerdes.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Linda Louise (Bechler) Gerdes of Hudson Oaks, Texas; his son, Michael Gerdes (Kim); his grandchildren, Scott Gerdes (Amy) and Stephanie Eagleson; great-grandchildren, Sydney Gerdes (Blanca Villas), Grace Gerdes (Reginald McDaniel), John Gerdes, and Edwin Gerdes; and great-great grandchildren, Malik McDaniel, Tkai McDaniel, Addison Lattin, Camille Lattin, Aaryn Lattin, and Carlee Lattin. He is also survived by his sister, Cheryl Cox (Stan).
A memorial service will be held in the coming days, with the date and time to be announced. Gary’s remains will be laid to rest in Spencer, Iowa.
