Thursday, July 5, 2012 at the Soldier Lutheran Church with a prayer service at 6:30 P.M. Gary Bernard was born June 3, 1947 in Sioux City, the son of Ivan B. and Gilma (Petersen) Gibbs. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith and later confirmed his faith at the Soldier Lutheran Church. He graduated from East Monona High School in 1965. After high school, Gary attended a trade school in Kansas City, Missouri. From 1968-1969, Gary served overseas in the Vietnam War. Gary and Joyce E. Phipps were united in marriage on March 29, 1968 in Onawa, Iowa. To this union two children were born: Gary Bryon and Cheryl Lynn. After serving in Vietnam, Gary returned home to farm until 1983. Gary enjoyed riding horses, camping, boating, fishing, traveling, and attending VFW events and his grandchildren's activities. Gary is survived by his wife, Joyce; a son, Gary Bryon and fiancée Amy of Omaha; a daughter, Cheryl and husband Michael J. Mordhorst of Soldier; four grandchildren, Bryon, Ally, and Josh Mordhorst, and Megan Gibbs; and one step-granddaughter, Maddie Arandus.
