Gary Wayne Goldenbogen, 86, of Beavercreek, Ohio, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2023.
Born on August 24, 1937, in Cleveland, he was the son of the late Wallace Nelson Goldenbogen and Audrey Mathews Goldenbogen.
Lynn (Calderwood) and Gary met at The Falcons Nest at Bowling Green State University. Their first date was to see the movie Oklahoma. They married in 1958, and went on to raise their family while living in Florida, Texas, California, England, Germany, Delaware, the Azores and Ohio. They enjoyed 61 years together.
Gary proudly served his country in the USAF for 22 years and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. His first role was a pilot in the Vietnam war flying a C-133 Cargomaster. During his time as a pilot, he also flew T33, T37, C123, as well as many small personal aircraft. He went on to serve as an Aircraft Squadron Commander, Major Command Air Operations Officer, Transportation Squadron Commander and finally as the Commander of the Civil Air Patrol for the mid-west. His many Decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Outstanding Unit Award, Organizational Excellence Award, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Longevity Service Ribbon, Meritorious Service Medal plus more.
After retirement, Gary was a financial planner for USPA and also worked at Heil Brothers doing warranty work. Gary loved to ride his Harley with all of his friends and was a member of a group since 2005. In addition, He was a member of a Buick enthusiast club and loved to show his cars. He owned six Buicks and would participate and serve as a judge at car shows around the state.
He is survived by; daughter Judith and her husband Paul of Columbus and grandchildren Brittany (Christopher), Casey (Patrick), Lindsay, Jared and Shane and great-grandsons Apollo, Cassius and Pace: daughter Ellen and her husband Dave of Kettering and granddaughter Hanna; son Michael and his wife Renee of Beavercreek, grandchildren Gabrielle, Sydney and Jayden, great-grandchildren Parker and Jackson; son Robert and his wife Jacqueline of Beavercreek and grandchildren Barbara (Michael) and Cole.
Visitation will be at Newcomer Chapel in Beavercreek on Thursday, December 21st from 10 – 11 am. Service will follow with a procession to Woodland Cemetery in Xenia with military funeral honors.
In lieu of flowers and because Gary volunteered his time for many years for livestock in the area, donations to Humane Society of Greene County are appreciated.
