I had the privilege of being of service to Gary (and Three Rivers Media) for two decades as his FCC lawyer. Gary was a dedicated broadcaster whose devotion to small-market radio is unsurpassed. He was a "tuck in the hospital corners" kind of guy when it came to FCC regulatory compliance, and his main goal (it seemed to me) was to provide a local radio service that was truly invested in the local community (primarily in Wytheville), enjoyable-to-listeners, and commercially competitive (or at least viable!). In my view, he accomplished those laudable goals, and he taught me more than a thing or two about public service, the radio biz, and sales along the way. Gary was a special man who had the unusual ability to audibly laugh at himself when he went a little bit too far expressing to me his distaste for certain FCC / business / music-licensing regulations--that kind of self-effacing attitude is an unusual commodity in the current era, and Gary's attitude in that regard is something that will stick with me.
