Gary Headley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Welch Funeral Home - Marks Chapel on Dec. 23, 2025.
It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Matthew Headley, affectionately known as "Stoogie" to all who loved him. A lifelong resident of the Northern Neck, Stoogie was born to the late Albert Monroe Headley and the late Florence Rosella Davis Headley and was one of ten children, a large and loving family that shaped his life in deep and lasting ways.

Stoogie was a master automotive body technician, a body man through and through. He was one of the best at his craft and there was truly nothing he couldn't fix. Over the years, he worked at several local automotive shops before eventually working only from his shop at home. His passion was unmistakable, especially when it came to vintage Chevys, which he loved restoring and maintaining.

A hard worker by nature, Stoogie also knew how to slow down and enjoy life. He was happiest relaxing at home watching old westerns or NASCAR, and he was a devoted Dale Earnhardt fan. He also enjoyed listening to classic country music and spending time at the Moose Lodge with his buddies.

Beneath his tough, hardworking exterior was a deeply tender soul, especially when it came to his daughter, Amanda. When Amanda and her husband welcomed their daughter, Stoogie was absolutely over the moon. Being Lily's PopPop quickly became his greatest joy and his favorite role in life.

Left to cherish countless memories of Stoogie are his beloved daughter, Amanda, and her husband, Zach Kues; the light of his life, his darling granddaughter, Lily; his siblings: Catherine Clark, Sue Ellen Thorne (Jim), Johnny Ray Headley (Dara), Pamela Spence (Tony), and Michael Headley (Christy); his best friend, Perry Withers; and many nieces and nephews who loved him.

Welcoming Stoogie into Heaven with open arms are his parents, Albert and Florence Headley; and his siblings: Richard Norman Headley, Elton Bubbie Headley, Albert Wayne Headley, and Roy Cecil Headley.

A Celebration of Life for Stoogie will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Welch Funeral Home, Marks Chapel, with the Reverend Lee Farmer officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
