Gary Wilson Heater, 84, of Barnett, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving wife, family, and friends.
A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Versailles on April 8, with visitation from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., followed by services at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow at the church.
A burial service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa, on April 25 at 10:30 a.m., followed by a reception.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Baptist Church of Versailles or the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
Gary was born on August 27, 1940, in Coon Rapids, Iowa, to Clarence and Ada (Betts) Heater. He was raised on a farm near Coon Rapids and attended school there.
On November 21, 1959, he married Sheila Smouse in Coon Rapids, Iowa. Together, they lived in Audubon, Coalville, Callender, Fort Dodge, Webster City, and the Des Moines area. Gary began his career in sales, working for Gus Glaser's in Fort Dodge and Nissen Meats in Webster City, before joining Sheila in real estate. The couple owned and operated Heater Realty in Webster City.
In 1983, they moved to Des Moines, where they ran Real Estate Appraisal Group. After retiring, they traveled the country in their RV before settling in Lake Ozark, Missouri. Sheila passed away in 2015.
On May 13, 2017, Gary married Sharon Evermon of Barnett, Missouri. Together, they built a home on Sharon's homestead, where they enjoyed horseback riding, traveling, and spending time with their beloved mini-Dachshund, Coke.
Gary had a lifelong love of fishing, playing cards, camping, reading, and flying as a licensed pilot. He was also an early adopter of new technology and loved tinkering with electronics, from video cassette recorders to streaming television.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Evermon Heater; his sons, Michael (Megan) Heater of Marion, IA, Darren (Janna) Heater of Webster City, IA, and Keith (Lori) Heater of Muscatine, IA; stepchildren Tammy (Ron) McCullough of Canton, MO, and Chad (Judy) Sweet of Argyle, IA; twelve grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren; his brothers, Dennis, Thomas, and Steven Heater; and his sister, Kathy Lloyd.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sheila Smouse Heater, and his parents.
