Gary Dale Helms

Gary Dale Helms, age 75, of Fort Smith, affectionately known as Gary D., passed away peacefully at home on May 28, 2025. He was born on January 24, 1950, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, to Walter and Thelma Helms.
On February 15, 1974, Gary D. married the love of his life, Debbie Helms, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Together, they built a life rooted in family, love, and community. Gary D. proudly served his country in the United States Army and later worked for Exide Battery, where he retired after many years of dedicated service.
Gary D. had a passion for classic cars and boating, and above all, cherished time spent with his family. He was known for his generous spirit and unwavering willingness to go the extra mile to help his family and friends, no matter what.
Gary D. was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Thelma Helms; his son, Brian S. Helms; his sister, Lisa Looney, and his brother, Dennis Helms.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie Helms; his daughter, Jennifer, and son-in-law, Matt Graham; five grandchildren: Lane and Zachary Thomas, Kaitlynn Graham, Justin Gatlin, and Jakob Scow; and three great-grandchildren: Luke and Isla Thomas and Max Gatlin. He is also survived by siblings David, Bruce, Linda, and Alan, as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
In honor of Gary's life, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society. At this time, the family wishes to remember Gary D. privately. Services are under the care of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
