Gary Imlay Obituary

Gary G. Imlay, 89, of Columbus, passed from this life at 1:20 p.m. Monday, March 16, 2026, at Silver Oaks Health Campus. Mr. Imlay was born July 24, 1936, in Columbus, Indiana, the son of Russell E. and Betty McCoy Imlay

He married Virginia Ann Manus September 26, 1959; she preceded him in death January 31, 1998.

Born into a family that would grow and thrive in Columbus, Gary set a lasting example for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His survivors include his children, Michael (Tammy) Imlay, Russell (Amy) Imlay both of Columbus, Jeffrey (Mary) Imlay of Louisville, KY, Beth Ann (Steve) Roth, and Suzy (Michael) Richardson both of Columbus. He was a loving grandfather to fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. Gary's sister, Betty Henry of Columbus, along with numerous nieces and nephews, also remain to honor his memory.

Gary's commitment to family was paralleled by his dedication to work. Retiring from Golden Foundry in 2003 after forty plus years of service as well as working at Daily Feed & Grain.

In service to his country, Gary proudly wore the uniform as a Veteran of the U.S. Army. At the East Columbus Christian Church, Gary was not only a member but served as a former Deacon. His faith was the cornerstone upon which he built his life.

A man of the outdoors, he found peace in hunting, took pleasure in long walks, and liked nothing more than mowing grass. He found joy in the quiet moments spent reading his Bible.

Gary's passage from this life marks the end of a noble journey. Although he joins his predeceased father, Russell E. Imlay; mother, Betty McCoy Ellerbee; sister JoAnn Imlay; brothers Martin "Bud" and Robert Imlay in rest, his story will be told through the generations of family and friends who were blessed to know him.

His life was well-lived, and his memory will be forever remembered by those who knew him.

The funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, March 23, 2026 at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Ron Bridgewater officiating.

Family and friends may gather for a time of visitation from 10:00 a.m. to time of service.

He will be laid to rest next to his late wife at the Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to East Columbus Christian Church or Hilltop Christian Camp.

Condolences and special memories may be shared with the Imlay family and a video tribute may be viewed at barkesweaverglick.com
