Gary Clifford Johnson, of Severn, Maryland, passed away in his home on July 3, 2025, at the age of 82, surrounded by family and friends.
Gary was born on August 18, 1942 in Winchester VA as the eldest of five children to Pauline and Clifford Johnson of West Virginia. Gary graduated from Brooklyn Park High School in 1961 and served in the Army Reserves for 6 years. While he was stationed at Fort Jackson in South Carolina, he met the love of his life Patricia in 1964, which started a lifelong journey of love and support that resulted in 60 years of marriage. They were married on January 29, 1965 and blessed with two wonderful children, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Gary was a devoted husband and father, taking an active role in family life, teaching his children and grandchildren critical life skills, encouraging, supporting and participating in their hobbies and sports activities (such as remote airplane building and flying, drag racing, water skiing, BMX racing, competitive swimming, basketball, and softball), and cooking large weekend breakfasts and dinners to show his love and support. Further evidence of Gary's close family ties can be found in his career working alongside his father, brother, sister and son in the family business Johnson's Appliance, which was located on Patapsco Avenue in Brooklyn, MD for 50 years.
Gary had a love for drag racing and could often be seen on Saturday's at Capitol raceway, where he won many races since the 1960's earning trophies and cash prizes. He enjoyed traveling, especially RV'ing where his appreciation began after he and Pat continued taking his mother after the passing of his father. Some of their favorite destinations included Assateague Island National Seashore, Lancaster and Gettysburg, P A, and Hiawassee, GA, to visit Pat's family. Gary had an uncanny talent for video games, especially Galaga and Shuuz where he is and will remain the top scorer on his son in law's arcade machines as a loving tribute. And, although Pat picked out the cute Samoyed puppy "Annie" in 1998, she was Gary's dog through and through.
Gary had an extensive network of friends, whom he and Pat shared their home with every Christmas Eve as an Open House tradition, even carrying over this tradition to their new home in Severn, MD. Gary was also a "dad" to his Pasadena neighborhood, where his neighbor's children and his children's friends came to him for help with fixing their bicycles, which he always took the time to do.
Gary is preceded in death by his mother Pauline; his father Clifford; siblings, Wendell, Ronald and Janet; niece Heather; nephew Ronald; and sister-in-law Wanda and several pets. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; sister Brenda "Susie" Clark (husband Dan Clark); son Kenneth Johnson (wife Kathleen) and daughter Jennifer Rauscher (husband Patrick), two grandchildren Zachary and Madison Rauscher; great-grandchildren Tegan and Tanner Rauscher; and niece Stephaine Scott.
His family wishes to extend their appreciation to the dedicated staff of Hospice of the Chesapeake for the care and services provided to Gary.
A Memorial Service will be held on August 16, 2025 , 2:00 PM at Rejoice Fellowship Church, 7606 Quarterfield Road, Glen Burnie, MD 21061. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake.
The Johnson family will soon host a "Celebration of Life" gathering for Gary's family and
friends. The date and location will be forthcoming.
