Gary Michael Lough, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025, with his loving family by his side. Born and raised in Remus, Michigan, Gary was the son of the late Eugene Donald Lough and Lucinda Elizabeth Strait. On July 20, 1968, Gary married the love of his life, Linda Lou Cruz. Together, they had just celebrated 57 years of marriage-a life marked by deep love, dedication, and unwavering partnership. At the young age of 17, Gary was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War, where he earned the Purple Heart for his bravery. Following his military service, he worked at Fisher Body and later as a Deputy Sheriff with the Mecosta County Sheriff's Department, where he made many lifelong friends. His passion for public service led him to serve as a magistrate judge for 25 years before retiring in 2008. Gary was a proud member of St. Michael Catholic Church and deeply involved in his community. He served as Executive Director of God's Helping Hands, was a member of the Elks, Knights of Columbus, and served on the board of the Horsehead Lake Association. In his younger years, he also taught snowmobile safety classes to local youth. A man of great character, Gary was known for his sharp sense of humor, his love of family, and his dedication to helping others. He was a craftsman at heart who enjoyed woodworking, hunting, and watching westerns. He loved singing karaoke and was always quick with a joke-his favorite saying being, "I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken." After retirement, he authored a book titled "I'll Be the Judge", reflecting on his years of service and life lessons. Above all, Gary valued his family and loved them deeply. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda; daughters, Samantha (Vern) Young and Stacey (Jim) Thompson; grandchildren, Jordan (Kayla) Young Chelsea (Wesley) Kenny, and Gizell (Jake) Maloney; step grandchildren, Kayla (Cortney) Thompson, Paige Thompson, and Elijah Cour; six great-grandchildren, Nolan, Wrenley, Collin, Marshall, Ruthie, Landon, and step great-grandchild, Lilith. Gary was the youngest of eight siblings and is survived by Eugene Jr. Lough, Linda Oosterhouse, and Carol Tatara. He is also remembered with love and respect by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Lucinda, brothers, Richard, Robert, and Jim Lough, and sister Donna Schwartz. Gary's loyal dog and companion, Gunner, remained by his side through his final days-a true reflection of the loyalty and love Gary gave so freely. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church on Saturday, August 9th, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Michael Alber as Celebrant. A luncheon will immediately follow the service at the Parish Center. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in memory of Gary Lough to assist needs for the Mecosta County Sheriff's office, a service that was close to Gary's heart. Donations by check or cash may be dropped off at any Isabella Bank location. Checks can be made to Sheriff Brian Miller. Please include the memo: "In Memory of Gary Lough."
