Gary Lee Mathis, affectionately known as "Giz," age 72 of Adrian, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2025, under the compassionate care of Hospice of Lenawee.
He was born on November 27, 1952, in Detroit, to Glen Thomas and Era Leola (Tanner) Mathis. On September 28, 1985, Gary married Mariann Roberts in Elkhart, Indiana. Together they shared over 40 years of marriage filled with love and devotion.
Gary was a man of deep religious conviction and found strength in his faith throughout his life. He had a passion for history and genealogy and was known as an amateur historian who loved exploring the past. A talented musician, he enjoyed playing the guitar and sharing music with others.
His love for animals was evident to all who knew him. Gary had a special fondness for classic cars and often attended car shows. He also enjoyed watching westerns and Detroit Tigers baseball games. Conversations with Gary frequently turned to his lawn, garden, trees, or home-topics he spoke about with pride and enthusiasm.
Above all else, Gary cherished time spent with his family. He was a devoted husband and father whose presence brought warmth to every gathering.
To cherish his memory, Gary leaves his loving wife, Mariann; two sons, David (Brynn) Mathis and Jacob Mathis; and his siblings: Lynn (Joann) Mathis, Dairl (Lawrie) Mathis, Danny (Cindy) Mathis, Sandy (Peter) Parafin, and Jon (Kim) Mathis. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will receive friends for visitation at the Anderson-Marry Funeral Home on Thursday, October 16, 2025, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Procession to Hunt Cemetery will immediately follow the visitation where a graveside service will be held with Pastor Joel Sarrault officiating.
Friends can express sympathies to the family online by visiting the tribute wall at www.marryfh.com. Memorial contributions in honor of Gary may be made to Hospice of Lenawee.
