Gary Murphy

1938 - 2024

Gary Murphy, 85, of Sequim WA, passed peacefully on March 3, 2024 with his family at his side. He was born June 17, 1938, to Marcus and Katherine Murphy.

Gary was raised in Sequim WA until his junior year of high school when he moved to San Diego with his family. He was an incredible athlete and pitched a no hitter for St. Augustine High his senior year. After high school Gary joined the San Diego Police Department where he served for 33 years, retiring as an esteemed homicide detective.

When he wasn't working, he could be found spending time with his family fishing, camping and traveling. He coached pop warner football, little league baseball, and fast pitch softball. Gary moved back to Sequim for his retirement years where he collected coins, pursued his passion for golf, and enjoyed the outdoors. He also continued his detective craft, volunteering for the Clallam County Sheriff's Department working on cold cases, working with the Tribal Gaming Commission on security, and volunteering for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Gary was a truly great man whose impact will be forever felt by his family, friends, and the communities in which he served. He was big in stature, but that paled in comparison to the size of his heart.

Gary, the most loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather is survived by his wife Mary, his daughter and 5 sons.

Friends are welcome to attend a service for Gary at 1pm, Friday March 15 at Sequim View Cemetery located at 1505 Sequim-Dungeness Way, Sequim, WA 98382. There will be a gathering with food and drink to celebrate his life at Stymies Bar and Grill located at 1965 Woodcock Road in Sequim after the service from 2-4pm.
